Bob Marley and the Wailers "Catch a Fire" (1973)
According to the book, a down-on-his-luck Marley walked into the offices
of Chris Blackwell at Island records. Chris clearly knew a good thing
when he saw it because he fronted up $6,000 to fly Bob and his band back
to Jamaica to record an album. Blackwell then took the recordings and
had some rocking wah-wah guitar and keyboard parts overdubbed
throughout, creating an engaging hybrid of the Wailers' Jamaican grooves
with a touch of rock fusion. He stuck it in a rather ugly 'zippo
lighter' album cover and sent it out into the world to become a hit.
The album would also go on to provide the name for New Zealand reggae band Katchafire.
