Youssou N'Dour "Immigrés" (1984)
By the time this album would actually see worldwide release (1988);
Senegalese percussionist and singer N'Dour had gained notoriety working
with Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon. One of those rare, but pleasant
occasions when an album not sung in English, and making no quarter to
contemporary western music (other than the odd synthesizer) managed to
find a wider audience.
N'Dour's strong voice and complex (almost chaotic to western ears) polyrhythms are a joy to behold.
